KIMCH’I – 20, ave Wilson, 11200 Lezignan-Corbières

First of all we must say that we have never been to a Korean restaurant before so we have nothing to compare with. The food was however made with a lot of ambition even if it did not entirely please us. Also we had the set lunch menu that might be something totally different to the more expensive alternatives.

For starter we had Korean Ravioli that was beautifully made with beef filling, but we had expected more filling with more tastes and less pastry. My main course was a Korean specialty – Bibimbap - that was nice, especially with some hot sauce.  My wife had pork ribs grilled with a sauce that made them black, which we were explained was not because it was burned – it was the caramelized barbecue-sauce. My desert was classic caramelized bananas, which was good, but my wife’s coffee was very weak and not warm. They however did not charge for the coffee as my wife did not really like her ribs.

My wife had a very good white wine from Chateau Grand Moulin. They poured her a glass and left the bottle so she could drink as much as she wanted. They charged for what she had consumed – a very nice way of serving wine. Myself I had a Korean beer Cass, which was very nice with the food.

The service was nice and the decoration of the restaurant brand new in, what I think is Korean style. You could call it Asian no-nonsense design. The rest-rooms were very proper, modern and stylish. I was especially impressed by the black toilette-paper.

COCO SWEET

COCO SWEET - 4 Place Salvador Allende - 11200 Lézignan Corbières

Lezignan-Corbières does not have a lot of good restaurants. It is not too much to say that it is quite poor for a town of this size in this area. One place we have noticed and passed many times is Restaurant Coco Sweet, but has never been tempted to go in. A friend said it was good so we decided to try it.

It was a very nice experience! The first impression when we came through the door was how spacious the restaurant was and how well designed the interior areas were. It was quite full of people so we sat down and was immediately serviced by a very friendly and professional waiter.

The menu was not at all what we expected – it had a mixture of traditional dishes and more exotic food. Remarkable was their 800 grams entrecote, which must be enormous. I settled for the 300 grams version and the meat was absolutely excellent. The women had an exotic chicken-dish that was really good. The selection of local wines is good and the prizes very reasonable.

So why did we not go to this restaurant earlier? First of all it looks very small and a kind of provisional from the outside. The name of the restaurant does not make us think of a serious place that put their first interest on the food – nothing could be more wrong. Secondly they advertise themselves as “grill, glacier” that also give the wrong signals to us and finally the whole signage from the outside make you think of fast food, drinks with umbrellas and fancy ice-cream.

We are very happy to have found such a good and unprentetious restaurant within a few minutes from our home.

Report 2014: Friends have reported that the chef has left and the quality has become quite bad and so has the service.

LE TOURNEDOS

LE TOURNEDOS - Rond point de Lattre de Tassigny, 11200 Lézignan-Corbières

The traditional restaurant Le Tournedos was started in 1970. It is now run by second generation owners since less than a year. For the locals the restaurant is known for high quality local food served in generous helpings. It is a typical winter restaurant where you can enjoy good food and high quality local wine in front of the enormous grill. Their grilled meat is fantastic.

The interior is somewhat booring and still the new owners pretend they have modernized it, but it is hard to notice. The service is, under the new management more custom oriented when it used to be in the old days when it had a certain "no noncense style".

If you appreciate really good local food to reasonable prizes, there are few better places to go. Maybe that is the reason why it is mostly packed with people in the restaurant.
